479. Dua When Praised by Others (Masnun Dua)

اَللَّهُمَّ لَا تُؤَاخِذْنِيْ بِمَا يَقُوْلُوْنَ وَاغْفِرْ لِي مَا لَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ (وَاجْعَلْنِيْ خَيْرًا مِمَّا يَظُنُّوْنَ)

Allaahumma laa tu'aakhidhnee bimaa yaqooloona, waghfir lee maa laa ya'lamoona [waj'alnee khayram-mimmaa yadhunnoon]

Dua When Praised by Others English Translation

Oh Allah, do not call me to account for what they say and forgive me for what they have no knowledge of [and make me better than they imagine].

It was the custom of the Companions that they would feel discomfort if anyone called them righteous or praised them. If someone praise them, they would say- (The dua is mentioned above)

Hadith about the Dua

Arabic Text

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهِ مَا لَا يَعْلَمُ يَقُولُ: "اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُؤَاخِذْنِي بِمَا يَقُولُونَ، وَاغْفِرْ لِي مَا لَا يَعْلَمُونَ، وَاجْعَلْنِي خَيْرًا مِمَّا يَظُنُّونَ".

Translation

Aishah narrated: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would hear someone praising him for something he did not know of himself, he would say: “O Allah, do not call me to account for what they say, and forgive me for what they do not know, and make me better than they imagine.”
