Section: The Concept of the Evil Eye (ayn)

A person who afflicts others by the evil eye is known as “Al-A’in” and a person affected by the evil eye is called “Al-Ma’yoon”. Ibn Al Qayyim (R) said in his book Zaad al Ma’ad: “It is the arrow that is taken out from the soul of the envious individual, the one whom causes the affliction of the evil eye, and then it is fired upon the subject of the evil eye. This individual can be affected sometimes and manage to escape it at other times. If one encounters this and is exposed to it then there will be no protection from its effect, however it then becomes imperative if one encounters this to take care and prepare themselves with the best defence and not allow it to be implanted upon them. It is in this manner that a person can protect themselves from the envious individual and not be affected by them. Sometimes these arrows return to the one whom they belong and this archery makes the envious individual feel the same negativity in his life like the negatively he tried to push on the subject.Allah (ﷻ) says: وَإِن يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ ﴿٥١﴾ Translation: “And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message and they say, "Indeed, he is mad.’” (Al-Qalam: 51)Ibn Katheer (R) uses this verse as evidence to show that the evil eye is real and that it has the ability to affect people since Allah (ﷻ) mentions ‘those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message’.An incident which is narrated from the time of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) saw Quraish ask some people who were known to give the evil eye to another person which could cause illness, death or some other effect to put it on the Prophet (ﷺ). However, Allah (ﷻ) protected the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) from those who were intent on destroying him with Ayn.Ibnul Qayyim (R) mentioned in his book Zaad al Ma’ad that some people have denied the effects of Ayn; and he describes these people as arrogant with no knowledge.According to some scholars the concept of effecting a person with the evil eye (Ayn) can be likened to the effect of when a person walks into a room and they feel embarrassment or shyness due to people looking at them, perhaps causing the face to change colour. Another example could be where someone sees someone they fear and they become pale in the face.Ibnul Qayyim (R) describes it as a physical or spiritual effect that leaves the eye and affects the human being.

There are different types of Evil Eye which a person can become afflicted with. They are:(العين) Ayn - The eye from someone who may love or know you and not have evil intentions towards you.(الحســـد) Hasad - The envious eye from someone who hates or dislikes you or something you have but wants it removed from you..(النفس) Nafs - The admiring eye which a person can put on themself.(النظرة) Nathara - The evil eye which comes from the Jinn.

AynThe Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake Qadr (divine decree), it would have been the evil eye…”. This alludes to the speed of the evil eye and expresses that if anything was to overtake the decree of Allah it would have been the evil eye, i.e. in its speed.HasadIblees envied Adam (AS) as he disliked his creation and the fact he was ordered to prostrate to him. He thought he was better because he was made from fire and Adam (AS) was created from clay. Therefore it was only envy which pushed iblees to transgress and disobey the order of Allah (ﷻ).NafsThe Prophet (ﷺ) “Whoever among you sees something in himself or in his possessions or in his brother that he likes, let him pray for blessings for it because the evil eye is real.”Narrated by Ibn al-Sunni, Al-Haakim and classed as saheeh by Al-Albaani 243.NatharaThis originates from the evil eye of a Jinn. The evidence for this is the narration of Umm Salamah (RA) who said the Prophet (ﷺ) saw in her house a slave girl with a discolouration on her face so he said: “Perform Ruqyah for her, for she has been afflicted by the eye of a Jinn.”From the above, we see that the evil eye can be given by a human or by a Jinn. It is also known that animals can give the evil eye too when they look at something. There are many stories and encounters concerning this and Allah knows best.

But we had already given the family of Ibraheem the Scripture and wisdom and conferred upon them a great kingdom (An-Nisa: 54)
Allah (ﷻ) also says: وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ ﴿٥﴾ Translation: “And from the evil of the envier when he envies.” (Al-Falaq: 5)
Section: The Similarities And Differences Between The Evil Eye And Envy
92
The Evil eye (in Arabic: Ayn, in Urdu: Nathara) is an illness which some people (not everyone) carry. It entails looking at a blessing which someone has within themselves or from that which they possess from worldly possessions with amazement or liking it. This then leads to dwelling on the matter, continually looking at the person who has the thing which he feels jealous towards and subsequently leading to an attack described as rays emitting from a person’s eyes (and their soul) and subsequently affecting him physically/ mentally causing him to become ill.One doesn’t need to physically look at someone to give them an evil eye, even a blind person can give them an evil eye. One can even give the evil eye merely by listening to the description of a person’s blessings. [Zaad Al Ma’ad: volume 4 page 149]Evil eye is like an arrow which comes from the soul of the one who envies towards the one who is envied and on whom the evil eye is put; sometimes it hits him and sometimes it misses. If the target is exposed and unprotected it will affect him but if the target is cautious and armed the arrow will have no effect and may even come back on the one who launched it. [Extracted from Zaad Al Ma’ad]According to Shaykh Khalid Al-Hibshi (HA), it is something evil that comes out of the soul and then attacks the person.Allah (ﷻ) himself commanded the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to seek refuge with Him from the envier. He (ﷻ) said (interpretation of the meaning): وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ ﴿٥﴾ Translation: “And from the evil of the envier when he envies.” (Al-Falaq: 5)Allah (ﷻ) says in another verse (interpretation of the meaning): وَإِن يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ ﴿٥١﴾ Translation: “And verily those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes (through hatred).” (Al-Qalam: 51)In a Hadith narrated from Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA), it says, “ أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ Translation: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and vermin and from every envious eye.” (Bukhari - 3191)The meaning of “vermin” (haammah) is lethally poisonous animals and insects. The meaning of “envious” (laammah) is that which causes harm because of jealousy (i.e hasad). The word “Haasid” (envier) is more general in meaning than the word A’in (one who puts the evil eye on another). The scholars disagreed over whether or not the evil eye is restricted only to jealousy, whilst agreeing that not every jealous person gives the evil eye. The difference of opinion follows:1. One group said, "Everyone who gives the evil eye is jealous but not every jealous person gives the evil eye." This is the Fatwa of the Permanent Committee for Research and Ifta' in Saudi Arabia.2. Another group said, "Not everyone who gives the evil eye is jealous and not every jealous person gives the evil eye." This is the opinion of a group of scholars. The evidence for this is that Ayn can even be given to yourself, your own children and even when joking. The evidence for this comes from the following Hadith: “Whoever among you sees something in himself or in his possessions or in his brother that he likes, let him pray for blessings for it because the evil eye is real.” (Ibn al-Sunni in A’mal al-Yawm wal-Laylah, page 168; Al-Haakim, 4/216. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Al-Kalim at-Tayyib, page 243)This Hadith explains that a person may harm himself, his wealth, his children, his wife etc by the evil eye.

Section: Envy is of varying degrees

1 A person wants the blessing to be taken away from his Muslim brother/ sister even if it does not come to him; rather he does not like Allah (ﷻ) to bless anyone else as that upsets him. This person may actively work to remove the bounty from another person without necessarily destroying the bounty itself. He may do this with his speech or actions and may do whatever it takes to bring an end to the blessing from the envied person.2 Where a person wants a blessing to be taken away from someone else because he hopes that it will come to him. This person does not just seek to remove that bounty from another person but also works to get the bounty for himself.3 Where he wishes for himself a blessing like that which someone else has without wanting it to be taken away from the other person. This is permissible and is not called hasad rather it is called “Ghibtah” (envy that is free from malice). The worst are those who simply wish to destroy the bounty regardless of whether they themselves get it or if it is simply destroyed. They only want to destroy that blessing because it was not given to them in the first place. Then there are those who cannot remove the feeling of envy from their souls. They cannot control it but they do not like it and they wish they could remove it from themselves. Those people, Allah willing, are not sinful for their state that they cannot control.People who have Hasad sometimes don’t know that they have hate towards others. They are in denial to themselves but their actions and speech are obvious to others. Hasad needs to be rectified by a person looking into their soul. Umar (RA) said, “Bring yourselves to account before you are brought to account. Don’t become superstitious or paranoid but get in touch with your soul and purify it as the soul is the doorway to your heart. The soul and heart are interconnected with each other, therefore if one is corrupted the other will be corrupted. The soul is like a child that wants to indulge in pleasure all the time. Your brain tells the soul what’s right and wrong. The heart feeds off whatever the soul indulges in and gets affected by whatever the brain tells it to do. Once a person taps into this then he becomes someone who is in control.Hasad (destructive jealousy) causes a great deal of harm in this world and in the Hereafter. Narrated from Az-Zubayr ibn al-A’waam (RA), the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “There has come to you a disease of the nations before you, jealousy and hatred. This is the ‘shaver’ (destroyer); I do not say that it shaves hair but that it shaves (i.e destroys) faith. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you believe and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of that which will strengthen love between you? Spread the greetings of peace amongst yourselves.” (Tirmidhi, 2434).Concerning the meaning of the phrase “it shaves (destroys) faith”, At-Tayyibi (RA) said: “hatred takes away faith like a razor takes away hair.” (Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi bi Sharh Jaami’ al-Tirmidhi)Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (R) said in his book Amraad al-Quloob (diseases of the heart):“Whoever finds in himself any hasad towards another has to try to neutralise it by means of attaining taqwa (piety, consciousness of Allah) and Sabr (patience). He should hate that the feeling of hasad is in himself… But the one who does wrong to his brother by word or deed will be punished for that. However the one who fears Allah (ﷻ) and is patient is not included amongst the wrongdoers and Allah (ﷻ) will benefit him by his taqwa.” Nobody is free from hasad, but the noble person hides it whilst the base person shows it.” A person will not be brought to account for whatever crosses his mind but he will be brought to account for what he says and does. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Allah will forgive my nation for their mistakes, what they forget and what they are forced to do (through coercion).” (Bukhari - 2033)The envious that doesn’t try to remove the envy from his own heart, there is a difference of opinion whether this type of person is sinful or not.According to Ibn Rajab (R), those that remove hasad from their hearts, pray for the person whom they have hasad towards and tell others of their goodness, they remove the hasad so much so they begin to love the person and love that Allah (ﷻ) has bestowed them with this bounty. These people are amongst the highest level of faith as they love for their brother what they love for themselves and this is what everyone should strive for.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake Qadr (divine decree), it would have been the evil eye…”. This alludes to the speed of the evil eye and expresses that if anything was to overtake the decree of Allah it would have been the evil eye, i.e. in its speed.Narrated from Abdullah Ibn Abbas (RA), he said the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The evil eye is real and can bring down a person from a high mountain.” (Sahih al Jami’ 4146). What is meant here is that the evil eye follows a person by Allah’s will until it causes him to fall from a mountain. Another understanding is that Ayn is so powerful it could bring down the highest mountain. We must therefore really consider the effects it can have on the human body.Narrated from Sahl ibn Haneef (RA) that the Prophet (ﷺ) came out and traveled with him towards Makkah until they were in the mountain pass of Al-Kharar in Al-Jahfah. There Sahl ibn Haneef (RA) did ghusl (bathed), and he was a handsome white-skinned man with beautiful skin. Amir ibn Rabee’ah (RA), one of Banu Adiyy ibn K’ab (RA) looked at him whilst he was doing ghusl and said, “I have never seen such skin as beautiful as this, not even the skin of a virgin,” upon those words Sahl fell to the ground. They went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, can you do anything for Sahl (RA) because by Allah he cannot raise his head.” He said, “Do you accuse anyone with regard to him?” They said, “‘Amir ibn Rabee’ah (RA) looked at him.” So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called Amir and rebuked him strongly. He said, “Why would one of you kill his brother? If you see something that you like, then pray for blessings for him.” Then he said to him, “Wash yourself for him.” So he washed his face, hands, forearms, knees and the sides of his feet, and inside his izaar (lower garment) in the vessel. Then that water was poured over him (i.e. Sahl) and a man poured it over his head and back from behind. He did that to him then Sahl (RA) got up and joined the people and there was nothing wrong with him. Ahmad, Malik, An-Nasai’ and Ibn Hibban. Classed as saheeh (authentic) by al-Albani (R) in Al-Mishkat.In another narration, the Prophet (ﷺ) came out and travelled towards Makkah, until they were in the mountain pass of Al-Kharaar in al-Jahfah. There Sahl ibn Haneef (RA) did ghusl, and he was a handsome white-skinned man with beautiful skin. Aamir ibn Rabee’ah (RA), one of Banu Adiyy ibn Ka’b (RA) looked at him whilst he was doing ghusl and said: “I have never seen such beautiful skin as this, not even the skin of a virgin,” thereupon Sahl fell to the ground. They went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, can you do anything for Sahl because by Allah he cannot raise his head.” He said, “Do you accuse anyone with regard to him?” They said, “Aamir ibn Rabee’ah (RA) looked at him.” So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called Aamir and rebuked him strongly. He said, “Why would one of you kill his brother? If you see something that you like, then pray for blessings for him (saying TabarakAllah). Then he said to him, “Wash yourself for him.” So he (Aamir) washed his face, hands, forearms, knees and the sides of his feet and inside his izaar (lower garment) in the vessel. Then that water was poured over him (Sahl, and a man poured it over his head and back from behind. He did that to him then Sahl got up and joined the people, after which there was nothing wrong with him.Narrated from Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA), Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “The influence of the evil eye is a fact. If anything were to precede the divine decree it would have been the influence of an evil eye. Therefore when you are asked to take a bath (as a cure) from the influence of the evil eye, you should take a bath.’ (Sahih Muslim Hadith 5427) Therefore the person who has been afflicted by Ayn should try to get the water of the person who has afflicted him and bath with it.Narrated Umm Salaamah (RA), the Prophet (ﷺ) once saw a young girl who had a certain expression on her face, so he said “Seek an Islamic formula for her because she is touched by the evil eye.” (Bukhari)

Sheikh Khalid Al-Hibshi (HA) says that Ayn has a tremendous amount of power. It has an influence in all areas of a person’s life, whether religious affairs, worldly affairs, moral characteristics etc. Some of the effects are summarised below:Effect on the minds: IQ, wit, memory, ability to focus, understanding and assimilation.Effect on the livelihood: Wealth, income, provisions etc.Effect on beauty: hair, face, skin colour, the body etc.Effect on religion: worship, humility, character, integrity etc.Effect on a person’s morality: modesty, truthfulness, courage, good characteristics etc.Effect on marital and family life: happiness, pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriages, raising and loving children, discord etc.Effect on ages: longevity, age relative to appearance, death, etc.Effect on the body: power, speed and activity, health and wellness, skills etc.Effect on livestock: camels, bringing down birds from the sky etc.Effects on nature: plants, trees and fruits, damage, burns, ripeness, shrivel and die etc.Effect on inanimate objects: cars, all kinds of devices, gold, women’s cosmetic application or products.Evidence From The SunnahNarrated from the freed slave of Az-Zubayr (RAA), he said the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
”The disease of the nations who came before you has started to spread amongst you; jealousy and hatred. This is the ‘shaver’ (destroyer). I do not say that it shaves hair but rather that it shaves (destroys) faith. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you believe and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of that which will strengthen love between you? Spread the greetings of peace amongst yourselves.” (Tirmidhi)
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “My nation will be stricken with the disease of the other nations.” They said: “What is the disease of the other nations?” He (ﷺ) said: “Insolence, arrogance, accumulation of wealth, competition in worldly gains, mutual hatred and envy until there will be wrongdoing and then killing.”

When you are asked to take a bath (to provide a cure) from the influence of the evil eye, you should take a bath.” (Muslim, Ahmad and Tirmidhi) - Bath for AynThe Sunnah method is to wash yourself from the water of the wudhu of the person who gave you the ayn if the identity of the person is known. If you don’t know who gave the ayn or their water is not available then wash yourself with water that is recited on called Ruqyah water as many times a day as possible; 3-4 times is good.Narrated Aisha (RA), she said the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to tell me to recite Ruqyah for protection against the evil eye. (Bukhari and Muslim)Recite Surat Al-Baqarah daily; minimum once but more if possible. For those of us that struggle with the recitation itself or with difficulty completing the recitation during one session, it is advised to listen to the audio recitation and put your finger on the words of the Mushaf as you follow the recitation.Recite Ayat ul Kursi, Surat Al-Falaq and An-Naas throughout the day while doing chores, shopping etc.Recite verses of Ayn,If you were reading and/or memorising Qur’an before you were afflicted, then continue to read/ or memorise the same amount of Juz with the intention of Ruqya, in addition to above, Listen to the Ruqyah audio Al Ayn. If the Ayn is related to education, then add Al Ilm audio. Signs of this are you don’t want to pick up the books etc. Daily Adhkar are very important.

Evidence from The Qur'an on the Effect of Al-AynAllah says: وَقَالَ يَا بَنِيَّ لَا تَدْخُلُوا مِن بَابٍ وَاحِدٍ وَادْخُلُوا مِنْ أَبْوَابٍ مُّتَفَرِّقَةٍ ۖ وَمَا أُغْنِي عَنكُم مِّنَ اللَّـهِ مِن شَيْءٍ ۖ إِنِ الْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّـهِ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَعَلَيْهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ ﴿٦٧﴾ وَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا مِنْ حَيْثُ أَمَرَهُمْ أَبُوهُم مَّا كَانَ يُغْنِي عَنْهُم مِّنَ اللَّـهِ مِن شَيْءٍ إِلَّا حَاجَةً فِي نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ قَضَاهَا ۚ وَإِنَّهُ لَذُو عِلْمٍ لِّمَا عَلَّمْنَاهُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿٦٨﴾ Translation: He also said, 'O my sons, enter not by one door; enter by separate doors. Yet I cannot avail you anything against Allah; judgement belongs not to any but Allah. On Him have I relied, and on Him should reliant persons rely. And when they entered after the manner their father commanded them, it availed them nothing against Allah; but it was a need in Jacob's soul that he so satisfied Verily, he was possessed of a knowledge for that we had taught him; but most men know not.(12:67-68)According to Al-Hafidh Ibn Kathir (R), in this verse Allah informs the reader that when Allah's Messenger Jacob (As) sent Benjamin with his brothers went to Egypt, he advised them not to enter from one door, but to enter from different doors. This is because Jacob's (AS) sons, as the exegetes Ibn 'Abbás (RA), Muhammad Ibn Ka'b (R) , Mujahid (R), Adh-dhahak (R), Qaada and As-suday have held were so handsome that he feared for them from being afflicted with the evil eye. The evil eye is a reality and could bring a knight down from his horse.Jacob's statement, (Yet I cannot avail you anything against Allah) means that such precaution will not stand against Allah's Qadha' (preordainment) and Qadar (destiny), for if Allah has decided something, nothing can overturn it.According to Ibn Kathir (R), (And when they entered after the manner their father commanded them, it availed them nothing against Allah; but it was a need in Jacob's soul that he so satisfied) is a means of soul that he sensatisfieds inga mean warding off the evil eye. [Tafsir Ibn Kathir: 2/485]Allah says: وَإِن يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ ﴿٥١﴾ Translation: The unbelievers well-nigh strike thee down with their glances, when they hear the Reminder, and they say, 'Surely he is a man possessed. (68:51) According to Ibn 'Abbas (RA) Mujahid (RA) and other exegetes, this is a reference to the evil eye of unbelievers which is indicative of their jealousy of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) because they hated him. Were it not for Allah's protection, their evil eyes would have affected him. This is further evidence that the evil eye and its effects are a reality. [Tafsir Ibn Kathir: 4/410]

He replied, 'Yes, for if there is anything that could ever race with destiny, it would have been the evil eye" [Imam Ahmad (6/438), At-Tirmidi (2059), Ibn Majah (3510), and classed as authentic by Al-Albani in Sahin Al-Jami' (1681)]Abu Dharr (RA) quoted the Prophet (ﷺ) saying: "The evil eye will, by Allah's Leave, affect man to the extent of ascending to a high place and falling down." [Transmitted by Imam Ahmad and Abu Ya'la, and classed by Al-Albani as authentic in Sahih Al-Jami' (1681)]Ibn 'Abbas (RA) quoted the Prophet (ﷺ) saying: "The evil eye is a reality that can bring one down from a high place," that is, from the top of a mountain. [Transmitted by Imam Ahmad , At-Tabarani and Al-Hakim; and classed by Al-Albani as authentic in As-Silsila As-Sahiha (1250)]Jabir (RA) quoted the Prophet (ﷺ) saying: "The evil eye drives man to the grave and forces the camel into the cooking pot." [Transmitted by Abu Nu'aym in Al-Hilya, and classed by Al-Albani as authentic in Sahin Al-Jami' (4144)]This means that the evil eye can affect man so badly that he dies and gets buried; and affects a camel so badly that it approaches death, gets slaughtered and cooked in the pot.Jabiri (RA) quoted the Prophet (ﷺ) saying: "Most of the deaths of my people, after Allah's Qadha' (preordainment) and Qadar (destiny), are caused by the evil eye." [Transmitted by Al-Bukhati in At-Tarikh, and classed by Al-Albani as authentic in Sahin Al-Jami (1206)]A'isha ra. reported: "The Prophet (ﷺ) used to tell me to seek Ruqyah against the evil eye." [Al-Bukhari: 10/170 and Muslim: 2195]Anas Ibn Malik (RA) was quoted as saying: "the Prophet (ﷺ) authorised the treatment of an evil eye, al-huma (poisonous snake bite or scorpion sting), and an-namla (ulcers which appear on the side) with ruqya." [Muslim: 2196, the Book of As-Salam]Ummu Salama (RA) reported: "the Prophet (ﷺ) observed a girl in my house, whose face had a black spot and said, 'She is under the effect of an evil eye; so treat her with ruqya." [Al-Bukhari: 10/171 and Muslim: 97]Jabir (RA) reported: "The Prophet (ﷺ) allowed the family of Hazm to treat a venomous snake bite with ruqya, and told Asma' bintu 'Umays, 'What is this that I see the children of my brother so lean? Are they not fed properly?' She said, 'No, but they are affected by the evil eye' He said, 'use Ruqyah for them' She recited a Ruqyah which he approved and told her to use it for them." According to Ibn Kathir (R), the strike and effect of the evil eye is a reality that occurs under the Command of Allah. [TafshIbn Kathi: 4/410]According to Ibn Hajar (R), the evil eye is a glance combined with jealousy, that comes from a despicable person to affect another. [Fath Al-Bari: 10/200 2 An-Nihaya: 3/332]According to Ibn Al-Athir (R), a person is said to have been affected by the evil eye if an enemy or a jealous person has looked at him, and that look has affected him, so that he becomes ill, as a result. [An Nihaya 3/332]According to Ibn Al-Qayyim (R), people with less knowledge denied the existence of the evil eye and claimed that what has been said about it was only imaginary. These people are the most ignorant, lacking knowledge of spirits and souls, their characters, actions and effects However, wise people of different religions do not reject the existence of the evil eye, despite their disagreement on its causes and effects. There is no doubt that Allah has created the human body and soul with different forces and dispositions, and endowed several of these bodies and souls with influential characteristics. No wise man could deny the influence of the soul on the body. It is something tangible For instance, observe how one blushes out of respect and shyness, yet becomes so yellow out of fear. In fact, there have been many cases where a person has fallen ill and become weak as a result of a glance. All of these take place under the effect of people's souls. The strong link between the soul and eye has led to the assumption that it is the eye which affects a person, who has been stared at, but in reality it is the hidden observing soul. Generally, souls differ with respect to natural disposition, power, and other special features. The soul of a jealous person, for instance, is obviously harmful to the targeted person. This is why Allah ordered his Messenger (ﷺ) to seek refuge with Him from the evil of a jealous person. The influence of a jealous person and the harm caused to another person is a fact which only someone with no knowledge of the human condition would deny, and it constitutes the basis of the evil eye. This is to say that an evil, jealous soul takes on an evil character, and when confronting a targeted person, it affects him with that specific character. A snake has a similar disposition. For example, venom exists in the snake with power. When confronting its enemy. the snake becomes angry and takes on an evil, harmful disposition. which, if intensified, may cause miscarriages or blindness; as the Prophet (ﷺ) said concerning Albatross (a snake with short or mutilated tail) and Dhu-tufyatayn (a snake with two white lines on its back): "They cause blindness and miscarriage." [Al-Bukhari : 6/248 and Muslim: 2233 2 Zad Al-Maad: 4/165]The influence of the evil eye may be caused by communication, encounter, sight, or through the influence of a soul on a targeted person. Sometimes, it is caused through invocations, Ruqyah and the recitation of verses of seeking refuge with Allah from evil (113 and 114), and sometimes through illusion and imagination. The influence of the soul of a person with an evil eye is not confined to sighting a target only For even a blind person could still influence with his soul if given a description of a target. Most people with an evil eye affect a target by having a description, without seeing the person or object. The influence of an evil eye comes from a person's admiration, followed with an evil disposition of the soul, which derives its strength from glancing at the target A man may even, against his will, affect himself with the evil eye. [Zad-al-maad: 4/165]
Section: The Difference between the Evil Eye and Jealousy
102
Jealousy is more general than the evil eye. A person with an evil eye is a specifically jealous person. Therefore, every person with an evil eye is a jealous person, but not every jealous person is a person with an evil eye. Hence, the seeking of refuge with Allah mentioned in the Qur'an (Chapter 113) refers to the jealous. Therefore, if a Muslim seeks refuge with Allah from the evil of the jealous, the request includes people with evil eyes This is indicative of the comprehensiveness, inimitability and rhetoric of the Qur'an. [See Bada’i “u Al-Fawa id: 2/232 and Zad Al-Ma'ad: 4/167]Jealousy is caused by resentment, hatred and the desire to see a person stripped of his blessing the evil eye, on the other hand, is caused by admiration and approval. Jealousy and evil eye share the concept of influence: both of them can affect a target. However, they differ in their source: whilst jealousy stems from the heart's burning desire to see the targeted person have a lot of blessings, then see him deprived; the evil eye, on the other hand, emanates from the gaze of the eye Therefore, a person with an evil eye may affect a target from which he is not jealous; inanimate things, animals, crops or money. He may even affect himself with his own evil eye. This is a stare of admiration, followed by a certain disposition that affects the targeted person. A person may be jealous of something predictable, whilst a person with an evil eye may only affect what is actually present .Man does not get jealous of his own self or his wealth, but he may affect these with his evil eye.Jealousy only comes from an evil, resentful soul; but evil eye may come from a righteous person who admires something without having the desire to see it taken away 'Amir Ibn Rabi'a (RA) affected Sahl Ibn Hunayf (RA) with the evil eye, despite the fact that he ('Amir) was among those who not only embraced Islam at an early period, but participated in the Battle of Badr.Among the scholars who dealt with the difference between jealousy and evil eye, are: Ibn Al-Jawzi, Ibn Al-Qayyim, Ibn Hajar and An Nawawi (R).It is recommended that if a Muslim sees something he likes, he should invoke Allah to bless it, whether it belongs to him or to someone else; according to the Prophet's (ﷺ) advice to Sahi Ibn Hunayf (RA): "Why don't you invoke Allah to bless it "; that is, to ask Allah to bless whatever he had, for the invocation of Allah thwarts the influence of the evil eye.
Section: A Jinn May Affect Man with its Evil Eye
103
Abu Sa'id Al-Khudris (RA) reported : "The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge with Allah from the Jinn, then man's evil eye. But when the Chapters 113 and 114 of the Qur'an were revealed, he adopted them, and discarded any other inappropriate invocations." [At-Tirmidi: 2059, the Book of Medicine, and Ibn Majah: 3511]Ummu Salama (RA) reported: "the Prophet (ﷺ) observed a girl in my house, whose face had a black spot and said, 'she is under the effect of an evil eye; so treat her with ruqya."According to the above traditions, the evil eye also comes from the Jinn. Therefore, a Muslim should invoke Allah & upon undressing, looking in the mirror, or starting any task in order to ward off the harm of the Jinr's evil eye, etc.
Section: Treatment of the Evil Eye
104
IntroductionThere are several methods for the treatment of the evil eye among which are:
The First Method: WashingIf the person with an evil eye is known, he should be asked to wash his body and retain any wasted water that he has used. The water should be poured over the affected person from the back, and he will - with Allah's Leave-recover.Abu Umama Ibn Sahl Ibn Hunayf (RA) reported: "As my father Sahl ibn Hunayf took off his jubbah to wash himself at Al-Kharrar, 'Amir Ibn Rabi'a (RA) was looking at him As Sahl (RA) was very white and had a nice skin complexion; 'Amir (RA) said to him, 'I have never seen the skin of a white girl covered in her garment'. Sahl became ill at once and his illness became worse. The Prophet (ﷺ) was informed of his illness and was told that Sahl could not even raise his head. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked if they knew whose evil eye it was, and they said that it was 'Amir Ibn Rabia (RA). The Prophet (ﷺ) summoned 'Amir (RA) and was furious: 'For what reason do you kill your brother? Don't you invoke Allah bless what he has Wash yourself for him, then." 'Amir (RA) washed his face, hands, arms, knees, legs and parts under the Izar (sheet) in a vessel and retained the wasted water. The water was poured on Sahl's back, and he recovered instantly." [Transmitted by Ahmad, An-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah; and classed by Al Albanias authentic in Sahin Al-Tami: (3908)]There is a controversy concerning which parts of the body are referred to under the sheet. Some were of the opinion that it referred to whatever part the sheet is meant to cover; some said it referred to the private parts; and others held that it refers to the hip, which is the place around which the sheet is tied. However, according to AlQadhi Ibn Al-'Arabi (R), the strongest view indicates that the tradition refers to whatever parts of the body are covered by the sheet. [aridhatu Al-anuļi (8/217)]Method of WashingIbn Shihab Az-Zuhri (R) said: "The method of washing as described by our scholars is as follows: the person with the evil eye should be given a vessel of water and told to wash his body with the same water in the following order, without placing the vessel on the floor: To rinse one's mouth, then spit the wasted water back into the vessel. To wash one's face with the water in the vessel. To wash one's right arm with one's left hand and one's left arm with one's right hand. To wash one's right elbow with one's left hand and one's left elbow with one's right hand. To wash one's right foot with one's right hand and one's left foot with one's right hand. To wash one's right knee with one's left hand and one's left knee with one's right hand.To wash the parts under the sheet.Afterwards, the wasted water in the vessel should be poured on the affected person 's back, in one go. [See Al-Bayhaqi's Sunan: 9/252]The Legitimacy of WashingThe Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The evil eye is a reality, and if there is anything that would ever race with al-Qadar (destiny), it would have been the evil eye; and if you have been requested to wash your body, then do it " [Muslim: 5/32]'A'isha (RA) reported: "The Prophet (ﷺ) used to order the person with the evil eye to do wudhu' and give the wasted water to the affected person to wash with" [Abu Dawud: 3880 (authentic chain of transmission)]It is from these two traditions that the legitimacy of wudhu' or washing is derived.
The Second MethodPut your hand on the patient's forehead and say: بسمِ اللَّهِ أرقيكَ، مِن كلِّ شيءٍ يؤذيكَ، مِن شرِّ كلِّ نفسٍ أو عَينٍ، أو حاسِدٍ اللَّهُ يَشفيكَ، بِسمِ اللَّهِ أَرقيكَ Transliteration: Bismillahi arqika wallahu yushfika min kulli da'in yu'zika wa mi kulli nafsin aw 'ayni hasidin Allahu yushfika, bismillahi arqika.Translation: In the name of Allah, I do Ruqyah for you, and Allah will cure you from any illness that may harm you, and from the soul or the evil eye of the jealous, Allah will cure you, in the name of Allah I will do Ruqyah for you. [Muslim: 2186]
The Third MethodPut your hand on the patient's forehead and say: بِاسْمِ اللهِ يُبْرِيكَ وَمِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ يَشْفِيكَ وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ ذِي عَيْنٍ Transliteration: Bismillahi yubrika min kulli da'in yushfika wa mn sharr hasidin 'iza hasada wa min shrri kull ziyn.Translation: In the name of Allah, He will heal you, from any illness He will cure you, from the evil of the jealous when he gets jealous, and from the evil of a person with an evil eye. [Ibid]
The Fourth MethodPut your hand on the patient's forehead and say: اللَّهُمَّ ربَّ النَّاسِ ، أَذْهِب الْبَأسَ ، واشْفِ ، أَنْتَ الشَّافي لا شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ ، شِفاءً لا يُغَادِرُ سقَماً Transliteration: “Allaahumma Rabban-naas, adhhibil-ba’s, washfi antash-Shaafi laa shifaa’a illaa shifaa’uka shifaa’an laa yughaadiru saqaman.”Translation: O Allah, the Lord of people, drive away the pain, and heal me, for You are the Healer, there is no cure except Your Cure; a cure that does not leave any illness, but that it cures it. [Al-Bukhari: the Book of Medicine, and Muslim: the Book of As-Salam]
The Fifth MethodPut your hand on the patient's forehead and recite the chapters: Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas (112/113/114) [Al-Bukhari: The Book of Fadha ilul-Qur'an, Chapter: Al-Mu'awwieat]

Case One: A baby who refuses its mother's breastfeedingWhile I was on a visit to some of my relatives, I was informed that a baby refused to breastfeed by its mother, for a few days, after he had been breastfeeding normally. I told them: "Bring the baby" When they brought the baby, I recited the Ruqyah for it, using chapters 112, 113 and 114 of the Qur'an and some invocations, then told them, “Take it to its mother.” After a moment, they returned and informed me that the baby was breastfeeding normally, thanks to Allah.
Case Two: A child who becomes dumbThere was a bright eloquent teenager, who was prominent among his peers at the intermediate level of school. He was their spokesman at meetings or gatherings, and would chat with people at parties. One day, one of his townsmen died, and he went to the funeral with his family. There, he praised Allah and delivered a well expressed sermon. In the evening of the same day, he suddenly went dumb. His father was stunned, and took him to the hospital, where he underwent the necessary examinations with X-rays. But, it was to no avail. His father brought him to me. He was in such a terrible state that, had I not controlled myself I almost cried, because I knew him as an active Muslim at school. I asked his father what was wrong with him. He told me the story, and the child remained silent. I knew then that he was affected by an evil eye. I recited the Ruqyah on him, using chapters 113 and 114 of the Qur'an, and recited the invocations of Ruqyah against the evil eye on some water and advised the father to give the water to his son to drink and wash with for a period of seven days. After seven days, the boy recovered and became as eloquent as he was before. taught him some invocations to say in the morning and evening, as protective measures against the evil eye.
Case Three: An amazing storyThis incident took place in my house. One day, a man and an old lady visited me. The man sat with me and told me his mother's story, and his mother sat with my wife. I called the old lady and recited a Ruqyah on her. When they left, I looked around in the house and noticed a lot of white maggots. I was surprised. My wife cleaned the house with a sweeper, but shortly afterwards they came back and spread in all the rooms I said to my wife, "Let us think about it." She asked what the old woman had told me. I replied, "She looked at every part of the house for a long while, without saying anything," I immediately understood it was an evil eye that hit our house, despite the fact that it was very modest But perhaps, the old lady was living in the countryside and she had never seen urban life. Nevertheless, I recited the Ruqyah of the evil eye on some water and sprinkled it in all the parts of the house. A moment later, the white maggots completely disappeared, and the house returned to its original state. And All Praise is Due to Allah.
