Section: Treatment of the Evil Eye

104

IntroductionThere are several methods for the treatment of the evil eye among which are:
The First Method: Washing
If the person with an evil eye is known, he should be asked to wash his body and retain any wasted water that he has used. The water should be poured over the affected person from the back, and he will - with Allah's Leave-recover.Abu Umama Ibn Sahl Ibn Hunayf (RA) reported: "As my father Sahl ibn Hunayf took off his jubbah to wash himself at Al-Kharrar, 'Amir Ibn Rabi'a (RA) was looking at him As Sahl (RA) was very white and had a nice skin complexion; 'Amir (RA) said to him, 'I have never seen the skin of a white girl covered in her garment'. Sahl became ill at once and his illness became worse. The Prophet (ﷺ) was informed of his illness and was told that Sahl could not even raise his head. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked if they knew whose evil eye it was, and they said that it was 'Amir Ibn Rabia (RA). The Prophet (ﷺ) summoned 'Amir (RA) and was furious: 'For what reason do you kill your brother? Don't you invoke Allah bless what he has Wash yourself for him, then." 'Amir (RA) washed his face, hands, arms, knees, legs and parts under the Izar (sheet) in a vessel and retained the wasted water. The water was poured on Sahl's back, and he recovered instantly." [Transmitted by Ahmad, An-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah; and classed by Al Albanias authentic in Sahin Al-Tami: (3908)]There is a controversy concerning which parts of the body are referred to under the sheet. Some were of the opinion that it referred to whatever part the sheet is meant to cover; some said it referred to the private parts; and others held that it refers to the hip, which is the place around which the sheet is tied. However, according to AlQadhi Ibn Al-'Arabi (R), the strongest view indicates that the tradition refers to whatever parts of the body are covered by the sheet. [aridhatu Al-anuļi (8/217)]Method of WashingIbn Shihab Az-Zuhri (R) said: "The method of washing as described by our scholars is as follows: the person with the evil eye should be given a vessel of water and told to wash his body with the same water in the following order, without placing the vessel on the floor: To rinse one's mouth, then spit the wasted water back into the vessel. To wash one's face with the water in the vessel. To wash one's right arm with one's left hand and one's left arm with one's right hand. To wash one's right elbow with one's left hand and one's left elbow with one's right hand. To wash one's right foot with one's right hand and one's left foot with one's right hand. To wash one's right knee with one's left hand and one's left knee with one's right hand.To wash the parts under the sheet.Afterwards, the wasted water in the vessel should be poured on the affected person 's back, in one go. [See Al-Bayhaqi's Sunan: 9/252]The Legitimacy of WashingThe Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The evil eye is a reality, and if there is anything that would ever race with al-Qadar (destiny), it would have been the evil eye; and if you have been requested to wash your body, then do it " [Muslim: 5/32]'A'isha (RA) reported: "The Prophet (ﷺ) used to order the person with the evil eye to do wudhu' and give the wasted water to the affected person to wash with" [Abu Dawud: 3880 (authentic chain of transmission)]It is from these two traditions that the legitimacy of wudhu' or washing is derived.
The Second Method
Put your hand on the patient's forehead and say: بسمِ اللَّهِ أرقيكَ، مِن كلِّ شيءٍ يؤذيكَ، مِن شرِّ كلِّ نفسٍ أو عَينٍ، أو حاسِدٍ اللَّهُ يَشفيكَ، بِسمِ اللَّهِ أَرقيكَ Transliteration: Bismillahi arqika wallahu yushfika min kulli da'in yu'zika wa mi kulli nafsin aw 'ayni hasidin Allahu yushfika, bismillahi arqika.Translation: In the name of Allah, I do Ruqyah for you, and Allah will cure you from any illness that may harm you, and from the soul or the evil eye of the jealous, Allah will cure you, in the name of Allah I will do Ruqyah for you. [Muslim: 2186]
The Third Method
Put your hand on the patient's forehead and say: بِاسْمِ اللهِ يُبْرِيكَ وَمِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ يَشْفِيكَ وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ ذِي عَيْنٍ Transliteration: Bismillahi yubrika min kulli da'in yushfika wa mn sharr hasidin 'iza hasada wa min shrri kull ziyn.Translation: In the name of Allah, He will heal you, from any illness He will cure you, from the evil of the jealous when he gets jealous, and from the evil of a person with an evil eye. [Ibid]
The Fourth Method
Put your hand on the patient's forehead and say: اللَّهُمَّ ربَّ النَّاسِ ، أَذْهِب الْبَأسَ ، واشْفِ ، أَنْتَ الشَّافي لا شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ ، شِفاءً لا يُغَادِرُ سقَماً Transliteration: “Allaahumma Rabban-naas, adhhibil-ba’s, washfi antash-Shaafi laa shifaa’a illaa shifaa’uka shifaa’an laa yughaadiru saqaman.”Translation: O Allah, the Lord of people, drive away the pain, and heal me, for You are the Healer, there is no cure except Your Cure; a cure that does not leave any illness, but that it cures it. [Al-Bukhari: the Book of Medicine, and Muslim: the Book of As-Salam]
