Hadith about the Dua

Translation

Abu Nadrah reported: Whenever Abu Sa‘id bought a new garment, he would name it—whether it was a turban, shirt, or cloak—then he would say: “O Allah, to You belongs all praise. You have clothed me with it, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness for which it was made, and I seek refuge with You from its evil and the evil for which it was made.” And when someone else wore it or he gave it to someone, he used to say: “Wear new clothes, live honorably, and die a martyr.” (Sahih – Al-Albani, Sahih al-Jami‘: 1234)

Frequently Asked Questions

The Sunnah is to say when putting on new clothes: “Al-hamdu Lillah illadhi kasani hadha'th-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah (Praise be to Allah Who has given me this garment to wear and has provided it for me with no strength or power on my part).” So, when you put on a new dress or shirt, it’s good to say this dua for new clothes as a way of thanking Allah.
