Section: The Meanings Of The Word Du'a

In the Glorious Qur'an, the word du'a has many meanings:1. WorshipAllah says:وَلَا تَدْعُ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لَا يَنفَعُكَ وَلَا يَضُرُّكَTranslation: And do not invoke besides Allah that which neither benefits you nor harms you. [Yunus: 106]2. Seeking helpAllah says:وَادْعُوا شُهَدَاءَكُم مِّن دُونِ اللَّهِTranslation: And call upon your witnesses other than Allah. [Al Baqarah: 23]3. Asking for something to be done Allah says:وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْTranslation: And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." [Ghafir: 60]4. Calling Allah says:يَوْمَ يَدْعُوكُمْ فَتَسْتَجِيبُونَ بِحَمْدِهِTranslation: On the Day He will call you and you will respond with praise of Him. [Al Isra': 52]5. Praising Allah says:قُلِ ادْعُوا اللَّهَ أَوِ ادْعُوا الرَّحْمَٰنَTranslation: "Say, "Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. [Al Isra': 110]6. Saying Allah says:دَعْوَاهُمْ فِيهَا سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّTranslation: Their call therein will be, "Exalted are You, O Allah," [Yunus: 10]However, the meaning of Du'a according to the Shari'ah is;"To entreat Allah asking Him with sincerity, to grant the good things which He has created, and to acquire what you need and wish."
