436. Prophet’s Dua in Battle (Ya hayyu ya qayyum)

يَا حَيُّ، يَا قَيُّوْمُ

O Ever Living One, O Eternal One.

Ali (RA) said: ”In the day of Badr war, after fighting for some while I was rushing to come to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to see what he was doing. I saw him in a state of prostration and only saying these words : ya ‘hayyu ya qayyum (O Ever Living One, O Eternal One) and didn’t increase over that. Then again I went to the war. After some time I returned to him. Again I saw him in a state of prostration and only saying those same words.Then again I went to the war. After some time I returned to him and saw him in a state of prostration and only saying those same words. Then Allah granted him (ﷺ) victory. We can see in this hadith how to make dua by dhikr. This type of dua brings best result.

Hadith about the Dua

Arabic Text

عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ: كَانَ أَكْثَرُ دُعَاءِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ، بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ."

Translation

Anas reported: The supplication the Prophet (ﷺ) most frequently used was: "O Ever Living One, O Sustainer, in Your Mercy I seek relief."
