135. Duas Before Bed

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِى اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِيْ وَأَخْسِئْ شَيْطَانِيْ وَفُكَّ رِهَانِيْ وَاجْعَلْنِيْ فِي النَّدِىِّ الْأَعْلَى

Duas Before Bed English Transliteration

Bismillaahi wada‘tu janbi, Allahum-maghfir li dhanbi wa akhsi’ shaytaani wa fukka rihaani waj‘alni fi’n-nadiyyi al-a‘laa

Duas Before Bed English Translation

In the name of Allah, I have laid down my side for Allah. O Allah! forgive my sin, drive away my devil, free me from my responsibility, and place me in the highest assembly.

Abul Azhar Anmari (RA) said that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to say these words when he was lying in bed at night.

Hadith about the Dua

Arabic Text

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي، وَأَخْسِئْ شَيْطَانِي، وَفُكَّ رِهَانِي، وَاجْعَلْنِي فِي النَّدِيِّ الْأَعْلَى

Translation

In the name of Allah, I lay down my side. O Allah! Forgive my sin, drive away my devil, free me from my burden, and place me in the highest assembly. Transmitted by: Narrated by Abu Huraira: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “When one of you goes to bed, he should lie on his right side and then say: ‘Bismillahi wada‘tu janbi, Allahum-maghfir li dhanbi, wa akhsi’ shaytaani, wa fukka rihaani, waj‘alni fi’n-nadiyyi al-a‘laa (In the name of Allah, I lay down my side. O Allah! Forgive my sin, drive away my devil, free me from my burden, and place me in the highest assembly).’” [Sunan Abi Dawud 5054, Sahih (Al-Albani)]

There’s nothing wrong with making dua before sleeping. Doing some dhikr or a prayer before sleeping is actually encouraged, since remembering Allah is supposed to be done a lot, no matter what time it is or what you’re doing. So, having a night dua or prayer before going to sleep is totally fine.
