452. Dua to praise Allah

One of Companions of The Prophet (ﷺ) had a characteristic that if he was praised, he would say:

اَللَّهُمَّ لَا تُؤَاخِذْنِي بِمَا يَقُولُونَ، وَاغْفِرْ لِي مَا لَا يَعْلَمُونَ، وَاجْعَلْنِي خَيْرًا مِمَّا يَظُّنُّونَ

Allaahumma laa tu'aakhidhnee bimaa yaqooloon, waghfir lee maa laa ya'lamoon waj'alnee khayram-mimmaa yadhunnoon

O Allah, do not call me to account for what they say and forgive me for what they have no knowledge of and make me better than they imagine.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهِ مَا لَا يَعْلَمُ، قَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُؤَاخِذْنِي بِمَا يَقُولُونَ، وَاغْفِرْ لِي مَا لَا يَعْلَمُونَ، وَاجْعَلْنِي خَيْرًا مِمَّا يَظُنُّونَ»

Translation

Aishah narrated: Whenever praise was directed at him for something he did not know about himself, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would say: “O Allah, do not take me to account for what they say, and forgive me for what they do not know, and make me better than what they think of me.”
